Who These Sessions Are For

Saturday Parent Sessions are open to any parent, guardian, or caregiver regardless of whether your child is enrolled in Scholar Vanguard. These sessions are for adults, not students. Bring questions. Leave with answers.

Parents of Elementary Scholars

You want to help with homework but the math looks different from what you learned. Session 02 is built for you.

Parents of Scholars with ADHD

Homework is a battle every night and nothing you try is working. Session 01 is built for you.

Parents Who Want to Support Writing at Home

You correct the writing and they shut down, or you leave it alone and nothing improves. Session 03 is built for you.

Any Parent Who Wants to Show Up Better

You do not need a problem to have. These sessions are for any parent who wants to understand their child's academic world more clearly.

The Three Sessions

Each session stands alone. Attend one or all three. There is no required order.

01
SESSION ONE

ADHD and Homework: Why the Fight Happens

Every night the same fight. The homework is not that hard. Your child is not that busy. And yet the homework does not get done without a battle. If this is your house, this session is for you.

Ms. Merriweather walks through what is actually happening in the brain of a child with ADHD when a homework request lands, why the most common parent strategies backfire, and what actually works. The session covers the neuroscience in plain English, the behavioral patterns that show up at the homework table, and one concrete framework you can start using the same night.

What you will leave knowing

  • Why ADHD makes requests feel like attacks and what to do instead
  • The difference between defiance and dysregulation at the homework table
  • What "the positive opposite" is and how to apply it at home
  • How to set up the homework environment for the ADHD brain, not against it
  • One script for starting homework without the fight

This session is for parents. It is not a diagnosis session and it is not therapy. It is practical knowledge delivered by an educator with over 20 years of experience working with ADHD learners in classrooms and one on one.

02
SESSION TWO

Elementary Math Then and Now: A Translation

Your child comes home with a math worksheet and nothing on it looks like math. You were taught to stack the numbers and carry the one. Your child is drawing arrays and partial products and number lines and their teacher marked your way wrong. This session explains why, and gives you the vocabulary to actually help.

Ms. Merriweather breaks down the major shifts in how elementary math is taught today, where those shifts came from, and what they look like in practice. This is not an endorsement of any one method. It is a translation so that when your child says "the teacher says we have to use the area model," you know what that means and you can help instead of guess.

What you will leave knowing

  • Why elementary math changed and what the research says about it
  • Triple digit addition: the way you learned it and the way they teach it now
  • Place value: what it is, why it matters, and how to reinforce it at home
  • Vertical addition, partial sums, and the standard algorithm: when to use which
  • Arrays and multiplication: what they are building toward and why it works
  • How to help with homework without contradicting the classroom teacher

If you have ever said "just do it the normal way" to your elementary scholar, this session is for you.

03
SESSION THREE

Writing at Home: Feedback Without Taking Over

You read your child's writing. It is not good. You want to help. You make corrections. Your child shuts down, resents the paper, or hands you a blank page next time. Or you leave it alone and the writing stays exactly the same. Neither option is working.

This session is about the middle path: how to give feedback that builds a writer instead of building resistance. Ms. Merriweather covers the difference between how schools teach writing today versus how most parents learned it, and what that means for how you read and respond to your child's work at home.

What you will leave knowing

  • Writer's workshop versus the five paragraph essay: what each is and when each shows up
  • What your child's teacher is actually assessing and how to support it
  • How to read a draft without rewriting it
  • Three feedback questions that build a writer's thinking instead of giving them your thinking
  • How to respond when the writing is genuinely weak without killing the motivation to try again
  • The one thing parents do that teaches children to hate writing, and how to stop

This session is practical and direct. It is for parents who want their children to become better writers, not just parents who want a better paper turned in tomorrow.

Saturday Parent Sessions exist because families deserve the same quality of support as their scholars. You cannot fully support a child's academic life if no one explains to you what is actually happening inside it.
